| Abstract | Oil spill, especially those occured during transportation, has been one of the major causes of environmental pollution. There are very few researches on alteration in germination and structure of the seedlings caused by petroleum derivatives. Longterm effects of such substances on plants are almost unknown. This study aims to analyze the effects of diesel fuel pollution on germination, growth and morphoanatomy of Sebastiania commersoniana (Baill.) L. B. Sm. & Downs in different periods after soil contamination. S. commersoniana is a brazilian pioneer and native species that generally assumes dominance over other riparian tree species. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse in four different treatments (noncontaminated soil and other 3 contaminated soils, with 60, 120 and 210 days of contamination) and 5 repetitions with 50 seeds each. The percentage of seed germination and the germination speed index (GSI) were lower in the 60 day treatment in comparison to the other ones. The percentage of germination was 58,4% in treatment T210, 70% in T120, 32,4% in T60 and 75,6% in the control. The fresh and dry weight of the seedlings, the root length, the aerial part length, the hypocotyl diameter, the leaf area and the dry weight of the eophylls were minor in the treatments with contaminated soil. The seedlings roots in the contaminated soils presented larger diameter, formation of aerenchyma and more developed vascular cylinder than the seedlings from the control. The diesel fuel caused alterations in the percentage germination, in the GSI, in the seedlings growth and in the morphoanatomy of the root and eophylls; however, the damage to the seedlings were minor in those whose soil was less recently contaminated. Key-words: diesel fuel; germination; morphology; anatomy; Sebastiania commersoniana. |
