| Abstract | Enteroscopy in the Year 2012: When Do We Need It and How Should We Do It? Small-bowel endoscopy has seen an expanding role in gastroenterology during the last decade. Nowadays, capsule endoscopy, balloon enteroscopy, as well as spiral enteroscopy enable the endocopist not only to achieve a high diagnostic yield in the small bowel, but also to take biopsies or to carry out endoscopic treatment effectively and safely. Capsule endoscopy is considered the optimal screening tool in case of suspected small-bowel disorder. It can be carried out in an ambulatory setting and the patient is not in need of sedation. Double-balloon enteroscopy remains the gold standard in deep small-bowel enteroscopy because intubation depth and the rate of complete enteroscopies are relatively higher in comparison with single-balloon enteroscopy and spiral enteroscopy. However, in daily clinical practice, total enteroscopy may not be required to make a diagnosis in the small bowel. J Gastroenterol Hepatol Erkr 2012; 10 (4): 7–13. |
