| Abstract | In tropical regions, grasses constitute the principal source of nutrients in cattle feeding. The main characteristic of tropical grasses is their capacity to produce dry matter, which makes them sources of protein, energy and fiber for dairy production. The study took place from February to June 2015 in Hacienda Santa Elisa in Danli, Honduras at 800 m above sea level, with an average rainfall of 1500 mm and an average temperature of 25 °C. The objective was the determination of grazing efficiency and reduction of the need to supplement with forage and feed in order to reduce costs during the dry season. Sampling was done daily in the pastures, obtaining performance parameters. The results indicate a low efficiency in grazing, low dry matter consumption by production cows and the need for high supplementation. Diets were designed in order to reduce supplementation up to 50% and maximizing pasture use. |
