| Abstract | In this article, two themes from the works of Marcel Mauss are examined because of their relevance for the study of food sharing among the Nunavik Inuit: The effect of seasonal variations on social patterns and the circularity of giving. While using ethno-ecological background information, Inuit socio-territorial organisation and practices are elucidated, and following this, selected aspects of rituals and taboos are examined while focusing on rules and codes associated with gifts and provisions of food. In conclusion, it is suggested that the cycle of giving and reciprocity has survived through modernity. |
