| Abstract | Impact of urban growth on innovation in the food crop sectors of North Cameroon. The growth of urban populations in the sudano-sahelian region of Cameroon raises the question of how food security will be achieved in future. North Cameroon experiences regular food crises, which lead to food imports and the need for world food aid. The current inflation of international prices for the main imported cereals (rice and maize) affects the sustainability of a strategy of increasing dependence on international markets. From a conventional economic point of view, the growth of urban markets, which exceed a rate of 50% of the urban population, is likely to create conditions that will encourage innovations in production systems. The consequence should be a technical improvement, which raises productivity and allows production to meet market demands. Nevertheless, this generic hypothesis has not really been applied in regions with fragile natural resources, which include North Cameroon or to the institutional situation of state withdrawal from the supervision of agricultural production. This paper aims to examine the relation between urban growth and the capacity of production systems to meet the resulting demand in the case of North Cameroon. |
