To do this, we apply empirical techniques of Social Network Analysis and graph theory. We describe the structural characteristics of weighted networks of flows of intermediate services embodied in manufacturing exports in these two periods and identify the main actors in the network. Special attention is deserved to the role of Spain. The mapping indicates that this network is still slightly dense, and would not correspond to a traditional centreperiphery structure. Instead, we observe a numerous, highly cohesive group of countries, with China, USA and Germany as the central economies, not only in the global network, but also in their regions. The network metrics highlight the increasing leading role of Asian economies, which would indicate their betting on upgrading within the global value chains (GVCs). Spain is part of the core, rising its role as supplier more than as a demanding economy of intermediate services, and strengthening its integration within the network during the period of analysis. |
