| Abstract | Water from drinking fountains can be considered a source of potential contamination, since several people with unknown hygienic habits access these sources, in addition other factors can be considered as the hygiene of boxes or reservoirs and the origin of this water. Physical-chemical parameters are also of paramount importance for water quality, as they may also influence the microbiological quality of the water. The water to be considered drinkable and of quality must be within the standards of Ordinance No 2.914 of December 12, 2011 of the Ministry of Health. This work aimed to analyze the physical-chemical and microbiological quality of water from drinking fountains at the Instituto Federal do Maranhão Campus Codó, where samples were collected according to the methodology described by Filho and Nascimento (2005) and some physical-chemical tests were performed by titulometry. The evaluated points were within the majority of the physical-chemical parameters required by the legislation and outside the microbiological standards, presenting contamination of the total and fecal coliforms group, being able to come from the reservoir of the drinkers, indicating a bad hygiene. A necessary alternative to reduce the risks of waterborne diseases would be to find the contamination points and check the possibility of contacting the public water supply agency to reduce these levels, as well as a change of the water tank that is in front to the men's bathroom, and may be a contamination factor. And this work can also be used as a basis for conducting monthly or semi-annual inspection in drinking fountains, in order to eliminate contamination and correct physico-chemical parameters outside the legislation. |
