| Abstract | Modification of the hydrological properties of wetlands and riparian zones for agricultural and livestock use is widespread worldwide. In order to understand the consequences of these changes, in the present study we evaluated the effects of land use and different proportions of wetlands and riparian zones on drainage canal water quality in two agricultural watersheds from the highlands of Rio Grande do Sul. Physical, chemical and microbiological parameters and organic material indicators of drainage canal water samples were evaluated four times at intervals of two to three months between 2009 and 2010. The results showed that the water quality did not differ between the watersheds, probably due to the compensation of greater wetland area by a lesser amount of riparian vegetation, and vice versa. The damage to and the depletion of wetlands and riparian forests by animal trampling and agricultural uses was found to reduce the natural ability to trap sediment and nutrients. Therefore, under high rainfall conditions, and if the amount of fertilizers applied by farmers is increased, the quality of stream water might be severely affected. Wetlands and riparian forests should be preserved and/or restored in order to mitigate environmental impacts of human activities. * Doutora em Geografia pela UFPR. ** Doutor em em Ciência do Solo pela UFSM *** Prof. Dr. do Departamento de Ciências do Solo da UFSM |
