| Abstract | The evolution in the littoral and benthic algae populations of Playa de San Marcos (north of Tenerife) during 40 years is presented. Changes occurred in the last decades and their relation with environmental variations are shown, based on the initial data of the marine flora and vegetation of this locality, published in 1970, and further studies carried out in the eulittoral and sublittoral zones. The continuous decline of populations of original algae, as Cystoseira abies-marina and gelidialean, is explained by transformation of subittoral habitats and chemical pollution. Original rocky bottoms changed into bottoms with high degree of sedimentation, that initially originate new environments colonized by a high diversity of species and assemblages, being the most abundant community that of Zonaria tournefortii. The catalogue of the current marine flora of this locality is presented, in which recently published findings for the Canary Islands marine flora are included. In the bottoms, sedimentation continues increasing and notable decreases in algal species and biomass have been detected last years. |
