Abstract Introduction: The specific hypertensive disease of pregnancy (SHDP) is characterized by hypertension, proteinuria and edema after the 20th gestational week. It constitutes the main cause of maternal death. Objective: To study the involvement with selfcare in puerperas diagnosed with SHDP. Methods: Quantitative approach study, with a semi-structured questionnaire with questions related to social demographic data, reproductive history, current pregnancy, prenatal care and prerequisites for selfcare. 45 pregnant women answered the questionnaire. Results: Most of the women were between 22 and 25 years of age, mulatto, with monthly family income above 1 minimum wage. Most of them had also finished high school and were homemakers with a stable union. Regarding the self-care, 88.9 % ingested between 5 and 10 glasses of water per day, 62 % changed their eating habits due to the pregnancy, 93.3 % did not exercise and among these, 66.7 % said they had a specific resting time. 71.1% confirmed to have the family as their support and 53.3% had as favorite leisure to watch television. Conclusion: We found that the majority of women showed involvement with self-care regarding the frequency as well as the beginning of prenatal consultation, medication intake, and social and leisure interactions. It became apparent that there is a need for educational activities in order these women to be aware that self-care is by itself a treatment. Keywords: Self-care. Pregnancy.
