| Abstract | The first objective of this paper is to present the validation process of an instrument based on the theory of planned behavior adapted to academic persistence. Indeed, this theory seems relevant to understand and explain the phenomenon of academic persistence. In this context, a first study was carried out (N1 = 152) to validate this instrument but also to test the conceptualization and operationalization of one of the determinant of the theory of planned behavior namely the perceived behavioral control. It helped highlight the psychometric properties of the instrument. The second objective of this paper is to test the predictive model of the theory of planned behavior but also to identify the role of intention in predicting academic persistence. Indeed, the intention is central in the theory of planned behavior but also in literature on academic persistence. However, the link between intention and academic persistence lacks clarity. A second study (N2 = 972) has been performed to clarify the role of intention. This study showed that intention is an important element in the explanation of academic persistence. This study also confirmed the psychometric properties of our instrument. |
