| Abstract | Primary hypertension is a prevalent chronic condition in adolescency. It may infl uence present and future life conditions and bring some limitation, such as the change of habits. Therefore, chronic disease is frequently acompannied by emotional disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychic suffering accompanying hypertension in adolescents. We conducted an outpatient based case-control study, evaluating 91 cases and 182 controls who attended a specialized university outpatient service in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Adolescents between 12 and 20 years of age took part in the study which evaluated the association between common mental disorders (CMD) as measured by the “General Health Questionnaire” (GHQ-12) – and hypertension. Data analysis was performed separately for boys and girls through unconditional logistic regression. We found a strong association between the presence of CMD and primary hipertension in male adolescents, even after adjusting for obesity – considered the main risk factor associated with hypertension – and family history of the condition (OR = 3,78; 95% CI: 1,28 – 11,17). This association was not observed for girls. The results show the need to special attention to the emotional aspects associated with hypertension in adolescency, especially as male adolescents are concerned. The results also point out that gender should be taken into account when analysing factors associated with hypertension in adolescents. |
