| Abstract | 1 A great proportion of men and women are not sufficiently active to reach health benefits. 2 However, males are more physically active than females. Participation motives are proposed 3 to be crucial to the problem of physical activity adoption and maintenance and might be one 4 key to a successful promotion of a physically active lifestyle. Men emphasize participation 5 motives such as competition and competence stronger than women whereas females prefer 6 goals like weight management and appearance compared to men. Derived from gender role 7 theory gender identity (instrumental and expressive traits) might explain sex differences in 8 participation motives and physical activity behavior. The primary goal of the study was to 9 examine if gender identity is associated with physical activity participation motives which 10 might be responsible for the differences in behavior. N = 415 adults (48.4% female; age M = 11 43.19 years, SD = 9.97) filled in standardized questionnaires to assess participation motives, 12 instrumental and expressive traits and physical activity behavior. With regard to participation 13 motives, men put more emphasis on Competition/Social Recognition and on sport activities 14 than women whereas women scored higher on Prevention/Health Promotion and Weight 15 Management/Appearance than men. Instrumentality explained variance in Competition/Social 16 Recognition, Psychological Motives, Affiliation as well as sport activities. Expressiveness was 17 significantly associated with Prevention/Health Promotion. As expected, sex was correlated 18 with participation motives, and instrumentality and expressiveness explained additional but 19 also exclusive variance. Future studies should use a longitudinal design and concentrate on 20 differences in frequency or type of physical activity behavior dependent on sex, instrumentali21 ty and expressiveness in order to learn more about how sex and gender influences physical 22 activity motivation and behavior. 23 |
