| Abstract | The evolution of aquende and allende throughout the history of the language has been re- corded diversely by Spanish grammars and dictionaries, due to the fact that these two adverbs of place are certainly problematical. First, historical linguists have not reached an agreement about their etymology; there are two conflicting theories, one articulated by Corominas & Pascual, the other by Menendez Pidal, based on the ideas set forth by Covarrubias. Second, Spanish grammars whether the oldest or the most contemporary, have not reached a consensus as to how these adverbs behave. Third and finally, neither have Spanish dictionaries been able to define them satisfactorily. They have been treated in different ways and they have frequently changed their grammatical status and semantic value; yet, no coherent chronology has been established. |
