| Abstract | Ecuador’s shrimp aquaculture sector has faced several problems in recent years, mostly due to the appearance of diseases and low sale prices in international markets. An alternative for this sector is diversification of culture products, making the native marine fish huayaipe (Seriola rivoliana) a valid and clear possibility for production and trade. The goal of this research was to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of growing huayaipe in earthen ponds with bottoms covered and uncovered with plastic liners, ponds that were originally meant for intensive shrimp culture. Physical and chemical parameters were monitored (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia and light intensity), as well as growth, survival and microbiological control, searching for noticeable differences between them. Adaptability of huayaipe to ponds was tested, having best results with liner-covered ponds, and also economic feasibility in international markets was proved. |
