| Abstract | The discovery of the Other as reflected in the contact between alien languages, cultures and traditions is not a recent phenomenon. At any given time in history there have been situations when the pressing need of communication between cultures has been hindered by linguistic difficulties. Hence the need of using mediators capable of bridging languages and cultures and of approaching their ways of thinking and acting. Knowing the initiatives devised in the past to facilitate communication between linguistically heterogeneous groups can help us better understand our increasingly multilingual and multicultural societies. Assessing the level of success of those initiatives will also be useful to avoid similar errors and to design effective responses to the communications difficulties posed by immigration today.
