| Abstract | Sattelite imagery, in addition to borehole and geophysical works across the area between Natal and Baia Formosa, clearly indicate a continuous faulting process from the Tertiary, at least Miocene, to the Quaternary. Three main sets of faults (NE-, NW- and NS-trending faults), which display both a strike-slip and a dip-slip component of movement, were recognised. The NE- and NW-trending faults represent reactivation of Precambrian shear zones and are the master faults of grabens and horsts across the study area. The brittle neoctectonic reactivation of faults in NE Brazil may be related to EW-oriented maximum stresses. |
