| Abstract | Development-related changes in cortical consumption in the guniea pig were studied with respect to changes in neuronal density. Total oxygen consumption was directly related to neuron density, with 5-day-old cortex tissue possessing significantly more neurons per unit area than mature cortical blocks. In contrast, mature cortical neurons utilized more oxygen than did 5-day-old cortical neurons. The results indicate that developmental changes in both cortical neuron density and cellular metabolic rates affect oxygen consumption patterns in developing guinea pig brain tissue.U |
