| Abstract | This article wants to present some antecedents with the purpose of knowing the competences that foreign language teachers need when they exercise their profession in the Colombian educational context. To do this, a documented review is made, in which the sources of researches working in the same subject are searched and to collect and connect the ideas as well as the different programs that the government has implemented in this country (Programa Nacional de Bilingüismo, Colombian Framework for English, Colombia Very Well y Colombia Bilingüe). In the second part, it can be declared that the definitions of teacher competence are plural but have one point in common and are defined as skills acquired not only during the training process but also obtained throughout the practice. In addition, it is important to state self-reflection as the main influence in the development of these skills because in teaching-learning depend on the context, population, language and socioeconomic level. The last part of the article concludes that educational policies should be directed to improve students and teachers' English level, training the last ones to develop their linguistic competences, class management and self reflexion of their practice. Also, working and economic conditions for this profession to occupy the place it deserves so the educative reality of the country has a significate transformation. |
