| Abstract | The ability of children to acquire social skills in school years depends on various factors. Determining these factors may be a guide to help children to acquire social skills and assessing the extent to which these social skills are acquired. The aim of this study was to examine the social skills of fourth grade primary school students in terms of gender, parents’ educational background, number of siblings, order of birth among siblings, perception of being loved by other members of the family, the perception of being loved by class teacher, participation degree in social activities at school, taking a reward when presenting positive behavior at home or school and academic success variables. Correlational survey method was employed in the study. The data was obtained by “Social Skill Scale” developed by Kocayörük (2000). The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference between variables such as gender, perception of being loved by people living at home, perception of being loved by class teacher, participation degree in social activities at school, taking a reward when presenting positive behaviors at home and school variables and social skill degree of the students. Moreover, statistically significant relationship was obtained between social skill levels of the students and academic achievements in Turkish, Math, Social Sciences, Music, Visual Arts, Games and Physical Activities classes. |
