| Abstract | Various industrial processes, as well as water and wastewater treatment systems, use continuous flow contact units to promote mixing and/or separation. Sedimentation basins, flocculation and disinfection units, temperature equalization tanks and water-oil separators in the oil industry are some examples. The velocity fields and distribution of temperature and/or concentration inside the unit assists in the understanding of the process, allowing a qualitative evaluation of its performance. The use of Residence Time Distributions (RTD) is also a qualitative tool, but parameters extracted from the RTD, allow a quantitative evaluation and can facilitate the interpretation of the results. Using a Computational Fluid Dynamics approach, an integrated assessment of the hydraulic and hydrodynamic efficiency of contact units is made. In this study, a rectangular contact unit is used as the reference unit and two different inlet and outlet configurations were evaluated. The results show that the insertion of diffusers and weirs along the inlet and outlet sections, respectively, distributes better the flow, increasing the efficiency of the units. |
