| Abstract | Since 1985, the Carajas railroad has been carrying the iron ore from the world's largest open pit mine in the Serra dos Carajás, located in Parauapebas (PA), to the port of Itaqui, in Ponta da Madeira, São Luís (MA). In the opposite direction, it carries a large contingent of families, attracted by better living conditions in southeast Pará. This migratory movement reflects the reality of an extremely poor rural population with few opportunities for its social reproduction, especially in Maranhão. In order to analyze the possibility of retention of these families in their places of origin, by the insertion of the family farming in the process of development and production of bioenergy derived from the oil palm, a socioenvironmental viability study was carried out for the implantation of a processing plant of the specie. The research was conducted in 2014 by a multidisciplinary team of two Embrapa units, Embrapa Amazônia Oriental and Embrapa Cocais. It was considered the agroecological potential for the oil palm planting (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.), in addition to the native species such as babassu (Attalea speciosa Mart. Ex Spreng.), as well as areas with natural and legal impediments to its production. Results indicated the best conditions and locations for the installation of a beneficiation plant that will turn palm biomass into biofuel, in addition to the main socioeconomic demands of eleven municipalities in the vicinity of EF Carajás, in the area between Santa Inês and São Luís (MA ). The productive potential of the oil palm under natural conditions found in the scope area of 2.748 Km2, according to the criteria used in the zoning of the oil palm – ZON Dendê, showed that: 1.749 Km2 (64%) are included in the inapt class and 999 Km2 (36% )in the excluded class, that can be expanded with the use of irrigation in the plantation areas. |
