| Abstract | Compacted layers of sand-bentonite mixtures have been proposed and used in a variety of geotechnical projects as engineered barriers for the enhancement of impervious landfill liners, cores of zoned earth dams and waste repository systems. In the practice we try to get an economical mixture that satisfies the hydraulic and mechanical requirements. In the first part of this paper present a summary of results to justify the choice of an optimum mix with regard to its saturated permeability. In the second part, we present experimental results obtained on the behaviour of the drying-wetting paths of the optimum mixture prepared at different degree of saturation in null external stress. Moreover, the comparison between drying-wetting paths and oedometeric or isotropic compression-decompression paths confirmed the equivalence between the effects of capillary and mechanical stresses. |
