| Abstract | Methods: Twenty-one LSS patients (mean age 65.23) (14 female, 7 male) and 15 healthy subjects (12 female, 3 male) were included to the study. After neurological and physical examination of subjects, nerve conduction studies in upper and lower extremities were applied. Bilateral H-reflexes, tibial and fibular F-responses were evaluated. For myotomal evaluation needle EMG was used. With cup electrodes attached to gastrocnemius muscle, peripheral motor responses were recorded by popliteal stimulation. At L1 level on lumbar site, using the monopolar tephlon needle electrodes with a midline entry, LES is conducted and bilateral gastrocnemius recordings were recorded. LES is repeated at L5 level and latency difference between L1 and L5 was recorded as cauda equina motor conduction time. Results: In patients group, L1-L5 latency difference was 3.59±0.23 msec (mean ±SEM) on right side, left was 3.49±0.23 msec, in control group, right was 1.45±0.15 msec, left was 1.39±0.17 msec. When groups were compared, patients with LSS and control group latency values differed at a statistically significant level (p < 0.05). Conclusions: LES tecnique executed to patients with LSS showed significantly prolonged cauda equina motor conduction time when compared to normal healthy subjects. This technique in patients with LSS is very useful method to manifest prolonged cauda equina motor conduction time especially before neurological signs become prominent. This method, due to practicality and its safety, can be conducted as part of the standard techniques. |
