| Abstract | Studies of identity at work have indicated the existence of an identity crisis generated by labor flexibility, leading to its destructuring and restructuring and transforming identity at work into processual identity constructions. Through qualitative research with in-depth interviews, the study aimed to identify the identity constructions present in contemporary work, performing a content analysis of the narratives generated by 40 workers over 35 years old in Sao Paulo, Brazil, selected intentionally. Identity constructions were based on 4 categories (nostalgia, closure, possibility and instrumentality) organized according to the systematization of identity types described in the literature. The results show the potential of using typologies, displaying 2 antagonistic movements of identity construction: the search for stability (nostalgia) or flexibility (possibility), with the weakening of professional and occupational identities (closure). The limits of this typology were also identified, finding that the instrumentality identity type is not permanent, but a temporary situation, and that there are hybrid and mixed identity types which were not foreseen in the systematization proposed. |
