| Abstract | The encounter with the unknown, a study of students’ motivations and experiences with mobility International mobility in higher education has become a political and institutional preoccupation these last decades. The Bologna Process that was initiated in 1999 has activated a lasting cooperation between European Universities. Thus it enhances exchanges through the creation of The European Higher Education Area. One of the major goals is to achieve 20% mobility by 2020. The research behind this article is based on narratives and its aim is in a qualitative way to make a state of the art of today’s mobility. Hence the methodological approach differentiates itself from the dominant global and European discourse that often measures mobility, its democratization and success on quantitative data. The investigation takes place in four European countries. Its results underline a need for knowledge about the profiles of the students who go abroad – this in order to be able to understand better their different motivations and experiences with mobility. One of the perspectives of the research is for higher education to focus on a personal student support before, during and after the students’ mobility. Français |
