| Abstract | Differential item functioning (DIF) and local dependence (LD) create serious problems for measurement of quality of life (QOL) by index scales summarizing responses to a limited number of different items. Conventional strategies for dealing with these problems often lead to elimination of otherwise sound items. In QOL measurements the number of items is often small. In these cases elimination of otherwise sound items result in damaging reduction of reliability. This talk discusses different definitions of the concepts of DIF and LD and discusses the effect of DIF and LD on specific objectivity. Finally, ways which these problems may be dealt with using so-called graphical loglinear Rasch models (Kreiner and Christensen, 2002) to model the effect of DIF and LD instead of removing items will be suggested. |
