| Abstract | Thi s articl e describes AB EL, a design tool fo r program mable logic device such as PAL , FPLAs and PROMs . AB EL (advanced Boolean ex pre sion lan guage) consist of a hi gh-level hardware des ign language and a language proce sor th at provides synt ax checking , logic reducti on, and design simulati on. In thi s paper th e structure and operation of the language processor are ex pl ain ed with the help of two practi cal examples. Actu al executi on times fo r convertin g a hi gh-level descripti on of a logic des ign to fuse states are given. Finall y, a recentl y developed PLD test program generator is di cu ed . Programmable logic devices uch as PALs, FPLAs, and PROMs are repl acing random and custom logic in a vari ety of applicati ons . New devi ce introduced by th e semi conductor manu fac turers have shown in crea in g complexit y and fl ex i bility with more product terms, larger number of input and output pins , int ern al feedbac k, intern al registers a nd pro grammabl e device charac teri ti c . The complex it y of many ne w device approache th at of low-end gate arrays. Unfortu nately, aut omated design tools fo r programmabl e logic have been rare and often limited to one device type. One popular tool is PALASM (Birkner and Coli , 1983), a s imple language in which Boolean equati ons are convert ed to fuse maps th at are used to program PALs. One drawbac k of PALASM, however , i th at the de igner must use simple Boolean equa ti ons to describe th e full functi on of the PAL. These equati ons must be reduced manu all y usin g Kam augh maps and De Morgan's th eore m for th e most effi cient use of th e product terms in th e PAL. Another di advantage to usin g PALASM is th at it can describe designs onl y fo r PALs, and not fo r FPLAs or PROMs. The Language Processor |
