| Abstract | BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study verifies the existence of an association between BIA parameters and clinical variables of interest for determining the severity of critically ill patients, and compare them with those obtained from healthy children. It is an early step in a project whose ultimate goal is to validate BIA as a prognostic marker or indicator of severity. METHODS: We studied 269 patients with bioelectrical impedance measurement in the first 48 hours of mechanical ventilation, admitted to the Critical Patients Unity (UPG) of the Instituto Fernandes Figueira (IFF) between January 2005 and June 2010. The measurement was performed using the portable plethysmograph BIA 101 Quantum II (RJL Systems, USA) and was analyzed by direct measurements and also its vector shape by the graphical method RXC. RESULTS: We demonstrated that the vector of bioimpedance changes in case of severity for pediatric patients. Not only low values of phase angle (PA) are seen in serious conditions, as described in the literature for adult patients, but there may be deviations heterogeneous behavior vector. CONCLUSIONS: AF larger than the population can also be associated with worse prognosis. Electrolyte disturbances, cell membrane metabolism and body composition may have greater impact on the bioelectric parameters of that demographic. Thus, the disease process disrupts the characteristics of bioimpedance influenced, for example, by age and sex. More research for the pediatric patients in the use of bioimpedance analysis as a tool in diagnosis, clinical monitoring, counseling and therapy as a prognostic marker. |
