Abstract	This discourse is an attempt to find answers to some of the questions related to the role of contemporary music in expressing and shaping national identity. The starting point was to define the meaning of national identity in terms of psychology. Following the notions of social, public and national identity were examined. Interrelationship between national identity and relevant ones allows to define coherent links and values they possess and what factors contribute to bring it its shape. The second part tries to conceptualize of what national identity is based on, what it is in fact and its determinants. What is the relationship between national identity and the culture? Finally, whether it can be received by an individual as a form of suppression? A focal point of this discourse will be also an attempt to define the essence of the roots of national identity in the context of appreciating the role of art in expressing and shaping national identity. The aim will be also to distinguish the exceptional role of music in comparison to literature, theatre, film, and the fine arts.
