| Abstract | Necessary data for the proceeding « System in Agriculture » have been presented. Among these, priority must be given to the definition of ecologically homogeneous areas. In addition to pedo-climatic criteria, agro-socio-economic data are essential as well as farm typology awareness. There are two main factors : 1. landavailability, and2. the presence or not oflivestock on thefarm. The definition ofcoherent technical itineraries can befacilitate by studies on crop binomials over large plots. It is important to figure outfrom the very beginning coherent crop Systems but agreât dealofflexibility is required. A test on the compatibility and validity ofthe proposed action will be carried out first over a controlledplot and subsequently with the farmer himself. It will be a research action, entirely carried out by the researcher and the farmer. Its final aim is to establish a number of options and alternatives at different level of intensification, but bound to the dimension of the farm. It will gather a number of varied but coherent solutions which will be submitted to the farmer who will, in turn, make his choice according to his objectives and means, in order to improve hisproductivity of labour. The choice can be adapted to most ofthe identifiedsituations by a progressive substitution. This action will allow to determine a global strategy for development to be used by the rural environment and some basic information on the extension work to be done. A good technical training will be indispensable. Lastly, it willallow to detect incoherences andincompabilities which will call the model in question again (research feed-back). A first trial has been carried out in Upper Volta, where a cartographie survey was realized, for the determination of agro-ecologie areas, and the choice of cropping System for each homogeneous area. It shows a perfect agreement ofthe chosen areas with the map of Upper-Volta soil resources drawn by ORSTOM. The proposed system is mainly a compromise, but a coherent one. It keep well in mind existing realities and is ready to accept, as it is, any moderate but determining innovations to ensure food selfsufficiency in Upper Volta. Its coherence may determined on the assumption of possible output and available means. In particular, the iden¬ tification ofa crop system representing an ecological area could allow for a treatment by simulation and the setting up ofan hydric balance model to be submittedtofrequency analysis, andcoulddetermine the criticalsituations ofthe system.
