| Abstract | This paper presents various theoretical methodological issues related to the recovery and identification of artefacts usedfor carving rock petroglyphs. It discusses their archaeological implications, notonly methodological -e.g. artefact classification techniques-, butalso empirical -e.g. the identification of archaeological artefacts. Discussion is based on an archaeological case from the Patagonian región. Finally, the paper argües that this proposal is importantfor studying technologies and the dynamics of the productive process of rock art in the past.
