| Abstract | This research aims to investigate the contributions of School Mathematics for civic education. In fact, these contributions arose from ideas developed by UbiratanD'Ambrosio, when he talked about the importance of civic education and training strand of the curriculum and OlleSkovsmose, to develop theories about the Critical Mathematics Education. Furthermore, we seek to support the concepts of other authors define and discuss the importance of civic education, including: Ferreira (1993), Machado (2002) and Freire (1996). We also discuss the organization of the pedagogic and curriculum, according to authors likePistrak and Santome (1998), as important elements to be considered to achieve the school goals. From this theoretical framework, we conducted a field survey in order to understand the contributions of mathematics education for civic education in a proposed Interdisciplinary Project which, among others, had the initial goal to relate mathematics to issues of environmental preservation and conscious consumption. For both the research was divided into three main stages: a survey before the project, between students and teachers, seeking to identify how these two groups perceive the contributions of School Mathematics for civic education; collaborative participation in their own development project, when it was observed that the involvement of some segments that make up the school community, presenting mainly focused on student participation and, as a final goal, the evaluation of the project by both the students and the teacher collaborative in the sense of seeking to understand what were the contributions Mathematics inserted in that context for civic education. It was possible to point out that, both students and teachers had a somewhat limited view of the importance of mathematics, associating it exclusively use in day-to-day situations basically buying and selling, and also the importance of treating discipline for a future use, for example, to get a good job. From the activities developed in the project it was possible to perceive that mathematics came to have another meaning for those involved. Concluding we now realize the fundamental tool for understanding broader situations and how important tool for critical analysis and decision making before social issues, for the common well being. |
