| Abstract | France is the third largest pork producer in the European Union, behind Germany and Spain. The French slaughtering and cutting industry enjoyed a continuous growth between the beginning of the 80’s and the end of 90’s, but the production has since stabilized in France, whereas it has continued to rise in Spain and more so in Germany. Furthermore, new slaughtering facilities have been built in Spain, and major slaughtering and cutting groups emerged in Northern Europe (Denmark, The Netherlands and Germany) due to mergers and acquisitions. Consequently, the French pork industry is now faced with two major challenges, to find a new breath and find the necessary capital to maintain its place in the European Union. |
