| Abstract | This study investigated the association between rea ding difficulties and working memory. Ninety children from 3rd and 4th grades of elementary school participated in the research, submitting, at first, to an assessmen t of the reading processes (PROLEC); and secondly, by submitting to a working memory tes t (The Color Span Test, TSC). The PROLEC assessed the participants’ capacities to identify the name or sound of letters, to distinguish between similar and differe nt words and read only the similar ones, to recognize words regardless of being able t o read them or not, read frequent words read non-frequent words and pseudo words. The Color Span Test evaluated verbal memory by requesting children to store names of colors in progressively longer sequences. The PROLEC results showed that the child ren presented different levels of reading, being classified as: children without read ing difficulties, children with few reading difficulties, and children with great readi ng difficulties. The Color Span Test results showed that the children’s favorite strateg ies to access mnemonic information were visual ones followed verbal ones. The Canonica l correlation results indicated that the reading difficulties and working memory are sig nificantly correlated; for the better was the performance in language tests, the better w as the performance in working memory tests. |
