| Abstract | The so called Spanish influenza of 1918, took the lives of more than 50 million persons and left many questions unanswered. During the last 3 or 4 decades, scientific investigation centered on this pandemic has grown at a huge rate, stimulated by the appearance of novel pathogens and the circulation of deadly avian flu virus. This article tries to elucidate the answers or hypotheses that have emerged from this intense effort. On the foreground, the reconstruction of the 1918 virus, an outstanding breakthrough that will, in the long run, become the arbiter of most of our inquiries. But this does not undervalue the research being carried out in many parts of the world, applying innovative statistical tools and epidemiological methods and researching testimonies in archives. The knowledge attained will help establish protocols that will prevent or reduce the catastrophic consequences of a similar pandemic. |
