| Abstract | In order to determine the quality of fresh semen in Criollo Limonero bulls (CL), semen samples were collected in ten sires for four weeks (40 ejaculates) using an artificial vagina, those bulls had a mean age of 41.4 ± 1.04 months and body weight of 441.5 ± 5.73 kg, respectively. Data were characterized using descriptive statistics and differences among bulls and weeks were analyzed using the GLM procedure of SAS. Parameters evaluated corresponded to scrotal circumference (CES), ejaculate volume (VL), sperm concentration (CE) calculated by Neubauer chamber, mass motility (MM) and individual progressive motility (MI) measured by visual observation, whereas sperm vitality (VI), sperm abnormalities (AE) and acrosome reacted (AR) were evaluated by staining smears with Eosin-nigrosin stain and microscopic observation. The CES values were for 34.4 ± 0.43 cm, and the observed average value of VL was 4.43 ± 0.25 mL and 839.50 x 10 6 ± 35.32 x 10 6 sperm/mL for CE. Values of MM and MI were 3.2 ± 0.08 and 70.50 ± 0.81 %, respectively, while mean values of VI, AE and AR were 72.77 ± 1.46 %, 14 07 ± 0.77 % and 24.47 ± 3.94 %. No significant differences (P>0.05) among bulls were observed for the studied variables, indicating homogeneity among animals. All values obtained are within the parameters of seminal quality established for bovine species, including other native cattle breeds, so CL semen cryopreservation could be performed and used in artificial insemination programs. |
