| Abstract | The objective of this study was to assess the semen variables of eight (8) 2-4 year old Holstein bulls from an artificial insemination center through routine tests. The potential fertility of tested bulls was estimated through in vitro fertilization (IVF) rate of homologous oocytes. bulls, using 12 ejaculates from each. The IVF rate was evaluated in 3 ejaculates randomly chosen from each bull, using matured oocytes obtained from ovaries of slaughtered cows. Sperm concentration, fresh and frozen (after thawing), sperm motility, and acrosome integrity were also evaluated. Data obtained was analyzed by descriptive statistics, and a correlation matrix was designed to obtain the association among the variables studies. Routine tests for semen evaluation showed that post-thawing progressive motility is the sperm treatment with the greatest influence on the selection of commercial ejaculates, and also the one showing the greatest association with IVF. However, no relation was confirmed between potential fertility and any one of the semen variables, which suggests that a combination of variables must be used in bull fertility estimates. |
