| Abstract | The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and factors associated with meeting the recommendations for physical activity (PA) among high schools in the state of Santa Catarina. Additionally, it was investigated the association of physical activity in different domains (leisure, travel and work) with compliance of the recommendations. This research is linked to a school-based epidemiological survey entitled "Lifestyle and risk behaviors of young catarinenses" COMPAC 2 . 6,529 students aged 15 to 19 years from public schools of Santa Catarina state in 2011 participated in the study. The sample was representative of the six geographic regions of the state (North , South, West, Vale do Itajaí, Plateau and Coast), with two-stage sampling procedure : (1) school, stratified by size (large : ≥ 500 students, average: 200-499 and small: < 200 ), and (2) classes, considering school shift and grades. The instrument used was the questionnaire COMPAC (Behaviors of Adolescents Catarinenses). The combination of questions related to the duration and frequency of PA constituted the dependent variable (meeting recommendations: ≥ 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous PA on at least five days a week). Demographic, socioeconomic factors and physical activities in the leisure, commuting to school and work domains were the independent variables. Descriptive and inferential analyzes were performed by using Poisson regression. The prevalence of students who met the recommendations of MVPA was 30.3 % (CI95%: 28.4 32.3). Being male, be 17 years old, being a student of 2nd year of high school, work , have a higher family income and mothers with greater education was associated with meeting the recommendations. Meeting the recommendations was associated with the practice of PA at work (RP: 2.37, CI95%: 2.00-2.81), in the leisure time (RP: 1.30, CI95%: 1.37-1.91) and in commuting to school (RP: 1.13, CI95%: 1.01-1.26). We conclude that sociodemographic variables are associated with compliance with PA recommendations, and that activities at work seem to contribute importantly with adolescents. Knowledge of these factors can help the design of actions to promote physical activity among adolescents . |
