| Abstract | The article focuses on the communicative approach to the teaching of the reading and writing skills of the English language. First, a theoretical base for this approach is established. The views of different authors who advocate this approach are examined. Some short-comings in the traditional approach to the teaching of the two skills are pointed out. The article then goes on to discuss fully the communicative approach to the teaching of the reading and writing skills of the English language. The merits of this approach are highlighted. Finally, the paper recommends the application of the communicative approach for improvement in the teaching of the two skills. |
