| Abstract | Mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum) is a native plant species that offers possibilities of added value as an alternative for agroindustrial production reconversion for small producers in the fragile ecosystems of the high Colombian mountain, as well as for the urban inhabitants of Bogotá. Like other Andean roots and tubers, mashua has a great nutritional richness superior to traditional agricultural products. The results indicate good performance of the species in adverse edaphoclimatic conditions, tolerance to attacks by pests and diseases, as well as excellent quality and productivity of the harvested product. Production was greater using organic fertilization, different from conventional chemical fertilizer treatments that only provide three essential elements: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This study demonstrates the wide possibilities of this species to be included as a sustainable production alternative that is low cost and friendly to the environment.
