| Abstract | Social stories are a visual method and consist of a short written story, which is designed to teach children with autism spectrum disorders social skills by enhancing the understanding of social situations. The purpose of my study is to gain a deeper understanding of the method of social stories and how it can support children with Asperger’s syndrome. The theoretical perspective in this study is social pedagogical. My questions are: Are social stories a useful method and which factors may contribute to desired results? What is the significance of social stories for children with Asperger’s syndrome? This study is a literature review and the material consists of articles from databases. Selection criteria are that the articles are available, relevant and published in the 2000s. Results show that social stories can be an effective method for teaching social skills to support the experience of participation and to provide an understanding of social situations and handling with feelings. To learn social skills is the most important support for the prevention of social exclusion. Visual aid benefits children with Asperger syndrome. Results also showed less success, but this may be because the intervention lacked important factors as parental involvement or because lack of illustrations. Results also showed the need for continued research regarding the maintenance of the effects of the method and generalizability. |
