Abstract	Many recent changes have occurred in the preparation, continuing development and careers of nurses working in today's health service. Nurses are not unique in these respects, as the flattening of hierarchies, the need to develop in role, to secure lateral career moves, to nurture a career, or even to change career several times, are all part of the reality of today's work environment and affect most professional groups ( Handy 1995 ).
