| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics The energy balance of a steady-state, laminar flow electric arc in constant pressure axial flow has been solved by an approximate method. It is shown that such arcs can be represented by a single non-dimensional characteristic which takes account of the variation of voltage gradient with arc current, length, flow velocity and pressure. Arc voltages have been measured in constant pressure nitrogen flow up to 50 A current and velocities up to 300 m $s^{−1}$ at 1 and 2 atmospheres' pressure. These results show good agreement with the theoretical characteristic. |
