| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics The shift and broadening of 25 two-photon lines of the $3s^{2} ^{1}$S to 3snd D series and 11 lines of the $3s^{2} ^{1}$S to 3snp$ ^{1}$P two-photon forbidden series due to collision with Ar and the self-shift and self-broadening of 25 two-photon lines of the $3s^{2} ^{1}$S to 3snd$ ^{1}$D series were measured using two-photon resonant ionisation and a thermionic detection technique. The dependence of the shift and broadening due to collision with Ar on the principal quantum number is discussed and compared with the experimental data for other atomic species and with theoretical estimates. The occurrence of two-photon forbidden transition lines and their lineshift and line broadening are considered as the formation of a Rydberg $Mg_{2}$ excimer and a $Mg_{2}$ $Ar_{N}$ Fermi complex. |
