| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics Some atomic processes, such as the impact broadening of spectral lines, are sensitive to the strength of the long-range parts of the interaction potentials between atoms. The authors present calculations of the broadening and shift of two sodium lines by argon made over various ranges of interatomic separations. The results demonstrate that for the determination of line broadening it is necessary to take account of collisions out as far as 30 au in the case of the resonance line (3S-3P) and out to 50 au in the case of the second principal series member (3S-4P). Shift measurements are shown to involve still larger interatomic separations. Not all published potentials have been evaluated out to such distances and consequently they are of limited value in collision broadening calculations. |
