Description	Journal: Physics Bulletin I take off my hat to Profs H Lipson and A C Rose-Innes for having had the courage to attack one of the academic world's most sacred of cows – the length of PhD theses (Physics Bulletin September 1971). Even Prof J B Hasted, in his intemperate defence of the status quo (Physics Bulletin October 1971) agrees that 'there is much good sense in some of the detailed comments of your correspondents'.
