| Description | Journal: Physics World The KamLAND experiment in Japan has found new evidence for neutrino mass. KamLAND detects electron antineutrinos produced by nuclear reactors in South Korea and Japan. However, the experiment recorded only 54 electron antineutrinos over a 145 day period, compared with the 86 predicted by the Standard Model. The most likely explanation is that the electron antineutrinos changed or "oscillated" into their muon or tau counterparts. Such oscillations can only be explained if neutrinos have mass. Previous experiments have observed oscillations in electron neutrinos from the Sun and muon neutrinos produced in the atmosphere. |
