| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics C: Solid State Physics $H_{2}$O flipping motion in $Li_{2}SO_{4},H_{2}$O is investigated through its influence on lattice modes. Dielectric measurements are used to confirm structural data related to this motion. beta $-Li_{2}SO_{4}$ single crystal FIR spectra are recorded to give further information for band assignment. FIR reflectivity of $Li_{2}SO_{4},H_{2}$O is studied in the 110-300K temperature range. At 190K a water molecule flipping motion starts and induces large frequency shifts (20 $cm^{-1}$) in some $H_{2}$O librational modes. At this temperature two $H_{2}$O translational modes abruptly disappear from the spectra. An order-disorder mechanism is proposed to explain these results. |
