| Description | Elastoplastic constitutive models for soils using only the first and second invariants of the stress tensor can not express strength and deformation behavior of soils pertinently. A few models scale the deviator stress depending on the relative magnitude of intermediate principal stress to incorporate various strength surfaces. But this approach needs an extensive search for a function that gives a convex yield surface. Even a non-circular convex yield surface can not simulate the change of stress-induced anisotropy with changing stress ratio. Nakai & Mihara (1984) and Nakai & Matsuoka (1986) introduced an interesting unconventional approach (modified stress) to incorporate a strength surface that circumscribes Mohr-Coulomb pyramid and it also shows gradual build up of stress induced anisotropy under monotonic true triaxial conditions. Later, Chowdhury & Nakai (1998) introduced another modified stress, which makes it possible to simulate strength surfaces of any shape and that automatically satisfies convexity. In this paper, the mathematical difficulty of the later kind of modified stress approach has been simplified greatly keeping its generality. Another feature of this approach is the introduction of the plastic flow in the modified stress-space, which requires a plastic work-like quantity to be defined using modified stress. Objectivity of the stress-strain parameters is then satisfied based on this work-like quantity. Book Name: Bifurcation and Localisation Theory in Geomechanics |
